Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
